at the a new storm... now moving into the bay area... along with high winds. you are looking at city crews hoisting the 25 foot acacia tree here in this video. it toppled over at around 4 am .falling on to this house on the 300 block of virginia avenue.the worst damage was that the backyard fence was knocked down..only caution tape and a few splintered boards remain..luckily the resident inside the home was not hurt. the city says they soil was saturated by the rain and the nearly 50 year old tree couldn't hold up any more. the homeowner says she called the 311 to complain about the city maintained tree on more than one occasionbut nothing was done. >> i knew it wasn't dying or near death and i thought that this city could come out and take care of their tree. what ever it was going to do. i knew that it was -- going to die. unfortunately, it came down on a a structure. >> the department of public works are now chopping up what fell down.they admit that the homeowner did everything right and should have been out here sooner. they say they are changing their producal on how to respond to f
hole and expose an 8 foot storm pipe. city officials say the big pipe was designed to safely transport a massive amount of water underneath this road steering rain water away from homes but somehow it failed. on sunday morning, the road caved in - the crater is now huge, 80 feet long, 30 wide and 18 feet deep. the failure is under investigation, but in the meantime, the race is on to figure out how to put in another drainage system. city officials say if there is not a temporary fix put in before the next storm hits ... it could be disasterous out here. also in the east bay... the amount we are expecting the rains to come back on tuesday. with a heavy rainfall on wednesday. the goal is to get down to this storm pipe by this time tomorrow as we can assess the situation. if we were exposed like this water would be the enemy when it comes to soil. if it came in like this fully exposed it could be catastrophic. we are trying to get the utility company to get down to the storm drain to reassess it and get it working for wednesday. if not, some taboret control measures and be prepared fo
they had to deal with last year. take a look. this is a major thoroughfare in this east bay city. from last april you can see mudslide caused a lot of damage. this line knocked out power to 65 homes in the area for several hours. it was quite a mess. a big problem for hundreds of residents. the director of public works tell the kron4 news that after investigation the slide was caused by misdirected storm water from a nearby home. this is the same area several months later. the plan was worked out and the homeowner has taken several steps to deal with the issue. the russian control materials have been put in as well as new landscaping and a concrete barrier. not all the work is done but major progress has been completed. hopefully another has been done to prevent another situation like last winter. >> that is just a small sample of what the city is doing to try to make sure that they are doing everything they can and anticipation of the big storms that are headed our way. >> kron4 is began carmen is and the north bay this evening. you have been talking to people there who have been getting r
